Tag der Mathematik an der Universität Konstanz

On Saturday March 12th a small team of 7th graders went to the University of Constance to attend the international day of Mathematics. The team of five departed on Saturday morning with Mr. Rüdisser and arrived shortly before 10 at the University.

At 10 a.m. the team competition started. Each team was given four questions which were to be completed within one hour. Our team was competing against some of the most talented students from multiple countries. The questions of enormous mathematical difficulty required the whole team to work together. Following the team competition, the optional individual competition started. Each participant gave his or her best to again answer four questions.

After the first two competitions all contestants got to take a lunch break. We were able to inside the university, being offered either Schnitzel or noodles. Succeeding the lunch break Prof. Dr. Johannes Schropp gave a lecture on the usage of mathematics inn pharmacology and the different opportunities to study mathematics.

In the afternoon the final competition started: the speed competition. In this competition the teams try to answer one question at a time as quickly as possible. As soon as one team has the correct solution a countdown starts, giving the remaining teams only five seconds to find an answer.

At the end of the day the winners of the competitions were named and rewarded. Although non of our team made it into the rankings we were still glad to have taken part.
